Mauritius
January 10 - 21, 2018
7 days in Mauritius turned into 10 days because of a cyclone. Mauritius is a beautiful island on the east coast of Africa. I would definitely like to go back, but at a different time of year when it's NOT cyclone season. Upon my arrival it started to rain heavily, which I learned was the first of two cyclones to hit the island during my stay. Luckily, the first Cyclone passed by without a direct hit and just produced a lot of rain. I rented a car, so I did a lot of driving around the island trying to find rainy day activities and attractions to participate in. Unfortunately, being a tropical island, there isn't much to do that entails being inside so I did as much as I could outside and got soaked most of the first couple of days.
After a couple of days of rain, the weather finally cleared up and was able to have a couple of nice sunny days. The second half of my trip consisted of more rain and awaiting the impending Category 3 Cyclone, Berguitta. Berguitta ended up coming very close to the island, but was not a direct hit. In an overabundance of caution, the island was pretty much closed down. We weren't allowed to leave the resort and weren't even supposed to leave our rooms for almost two days. It ended up being a non-event, with just a lot of wind a rain. However, Berguitta did close the airport for 2 days and caused chaos as it seems Air Mauritius, the main airline to the island, which also books flights for a lot of other airlines didn't seem to have any sort of Disaster Recovery Plan.
